Basics of Arthritis of the Spine

Our spine is very delicate. Those who suffer from arthritis of the spine are can attest to that. I can honestly say, at this point, I haven’t had any trouble with my spine.

Arthritis of the spine can be cause by several things. One of the ways this condition is brought on is if there has been a trauma to the spine. For example, a car accident that causes multiple compressions of the discs in the back cause a trauma to the back. The back will be used to try and compensate for the loss of the disc function and after an extended amount of time the bones and joints will become rigid and brittle and cause stiffness in the back that is very painful.

Other ways that arthritis of the spine can occur is through poor posture. With poor posture there is pressure on the bones and joints causing them to become brittle and rigid. The muscles around the spine become rigid from trying make up the missing support in the back.

Though the condition will not go away, there are a few things that can be done to help with the symptoms of the arthritis of the spine. A chiropractor may recommend regular adjustments to try and regain mobility in the back. There may be particular mattresses and pillows that they recommend to try and help position the back properly. Correcting the posture if possible can help relieve some of the pain associated with the arthritis of the spine. There are some supplements that the chiropractor and your primary care physician make recommend as well. There are several that are said to relieve joint stiffness such as shark cartilage.

If you feel that you are suffering from arthritis of the spine or are in danger of the condition in your near future, seek the assistance of a chiropractor as soon as possible so that you can try to correct the problem before the symptoms become worse.
