Methotrexate for Rheumatoid Arthritis Relief

Methotrexate is a drug that is commonly used to treat cancer patients because it attacks cells that reproduce at a rapid rate. It also works well for patients suffering from autoimmune disorders such as severe psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis. The medicine is only taken once or twice a week, depending on your ailment. It is very important that you do not take the medication more than directed, because it can cause serious side effects and sometimes death when used improperly.

Although I’m not crazy about the idea, I have been taking 6 tablets Methotrexate for several years, but I have tried to cut back on the amount I am taking and so far, I am making it fine with the dosage I now take. If I could only cut the rest of my medicines, I would be happy.

Methotrexate come with a few of the more serious side effects, such as diarrhea, dry mouth, changes in vision, skin rashes, fainting and mouth and throat sores. Keep in mind, these symptoms should immediately be reported to your doctor. The following symptoms are common and should not cause you immediate concern. If they continue, you may want to talk to your doctor about it. These include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea and lack of appetite. I know for myself, I have had other symptoms. I tend to be more prone to kidney infections and I also develop mouth ulcers.

While taking this medication, you should drink lots of water and avoid alcohol. You also need to be aware of the fact that aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, Pepto-Bismol, various antibiotics and some vaccines can interact with Methotrexate and cause unwanted side effects. During the time you are taking this drug, your doctor will need blood drawn regularly to monitor various organs and their functionality. Again, it is important that you do not increase your doses unless prescribed by your doctor. And, do not take it any longer then directed.

I would be interested in hearing what anyone else has to say about their reactions to Methotrexate and how well the drug does for them. I currently am taking only 4 (2.5 mg) tablets once a week. However, I am suppose to be taking 6. I just hope it doesn’t affect my condition any. So far, so good.
